What Is a Class 7 MOT
A Class 7 MOT is the DVSA test for goods vehicles and larger vans with a design gross weight between 3,000kg and 3,500kg. It checks that the vehicle meets the legal minimum standards for safety and emissions before it's allowed to keep working on the road.
It's the test class that applies to bigger commercial vans rather than standard cars. If you run a long wheelbase Ford Transit, a Mercedes Sprinter, a Vauxhall Movano or a similar panel van over 3 tonnes, Class 7 is almost certainly the test your vehicle needs. It's different from a Class 4 MOT, which covers cars, taxis, motor caravans and smaller vans up to 3,000kg.

Which Vehicles Qualify for a Class 7 MOT
Your vehicle falls under Class 7 if it's a goods vehicle or panel van with a design gross weight between 3,000kg and 3,500kg. Common examples include:
Long wheelbase panel vans
Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Vauxhall Movano and similar vans built on the larger chassis.
Box vans and Luton vans
Goods vehicles with a box or Luton body over 3,000kg.
Crew cab and tipper vans
Commercial vans configured for trade or construction use, within the same weight band.
Refrigerated and specialist vans
Cooled or converted vans used for delivery, provided the design gross weight sits between 3,000kg and 3,500kg.
If you're not sure which class applies to your van, check the design gross weight shown on your V5C logbook or the manufacturer's plate, usually fixed inside the driver's door. Getting this wrong wastes a trip, since a Class 4 vehicle can't be tested against Class 7 rules and vice versa. Call us and we'll confirm before you book.
What a Class 7 MOT Actually Checks
A Class 7 test covers the same core safety categories as a car MOT, plus some checks specific to heavier goods vehicles. Our testers go through each of the following:
Brakes
Pedal operation, handbrake performance, brake wear, fluid condition, and the higher braking force standard that applies to heavier vehicles.
Suspension
Shock absorbers, springs, joints and structural condition under load, checked more rigorously than on a Class 4 test given the weight these vehicles carry.
Steering
Steering wheel play, power steering operation, mechanical condition of the column and linkages.
Tyres and wheels
Tread depth, damage, correct size and type, and load rating, since van tyres have to be rated to carry the vehicle's working load.
Lights and electrical equipment
Headlamps, indicators, brake lights, position lamps, aim and function of all lighting, plus visible wiring.
Visibility
Windscreen condition and wiper function, driver's field of view, mirrors.
Seatbelts and restraints
Condition, operation and anchorage of every seatbelt fitted.
Structure and bodywork
Chassis condition, corrosion in structural and load bearing areas, exhaust mounting, bumpers, doors and load area.
Emissions
Exhaust emissions against the limits for the vehicle's fuel type and age.
Registration plates, VIN and identification
Plate legibility and correct format, VIN present and legible.
This isn't a mechanical service and doesn't cover engine performance, gearbox condition or general wear items that aren't safety related. Roof racks, ply lining and racking fitted for trade use don't cause a fail on their own, unless they obstruct or interfere with an item being checked. If a fault is found that isn't an MOT failure but is worth knowing about, our testers will flag it as an advisory rather than fail the van for it.

First MOT for a New Van
A goods vehicle needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of the date it was first registered in Great Britain, the same rule that applies to cars under Class 4. You can book it up to one month minus a day before that date and the test will still count from the original due date, so you don't lose any time. After the first test, the van needs a Class 7 MOT every year from then on.
- If your van isn't three years old yet, you don't need to book one.
- If you're within that final month, book it now rather than leaving it to the last few days, since a Class 7 slot can be harder to find at short notice.
- For the exact rule as it applies in Northern Ireland, check gov.uk directly, since the timing works differently there.

You'll be given a full list of any failed items. You can have the work done with us or elsewhere, then bring the van back for a retest. If it's brought back to us by the end of the next working day, the retest on those specific items is free, the same policy that applies to our Class 4 tests. This matters more for commercial vehicles, since it avoids a second full price test on top of the time already lost.
