AGM, EFB and Standard: Which Battery Does Your Car Need?
Fitting the wrong battery type can shorten its life, trigger fault codes and affect stop-start performance. We always match the correct specification to your vehicle.
Standard Lead-Acid Battery
The conventional battery used in vehicles without stop-start or energy recuperation systems. Reliable and cost-effective for straightforward petrol and diesel cars used on a mix of town and longer journeys.
- Conventional petrol and diesel vehicles
- No stop-start system fitted
- No brake energy recuperation
- Most cars built before around 2012
EFB Battery (Enhanced Flooded Battery)
EFB batteries are designed for vehicles with basic stop-start systems. They handle the frequent engine-off and engine-restart cycles that a standard battery cannot cope with reliably over time. Common on many mainstream family cars.
- Basic stop-start systems
- Higher cycle life than standard
- Ford, Vauxhall, Renault and many others
- Can replace a standard battery as an upgrade
AGM Battery (Absorbent Glass Mat)
AGM batteries are sealed, spill-proof and built for vehicles with advanced stop-start, brake energy recuperation or high electrical loads. They absorb and deliver power faster than EFB or standard batteries. Required on many premium and modern vehicles.
- Advanced stop-start systems
- Brake energy recuperation (BER)
- BMW, Audi, Mercedes, VW and many others
- Cannot be substituted with EFB or standard
Important: Fitting a standard battery in a vehicle specified for AGM will not damage the car immediately, but the battery will wear out far more quickly because it cannot handle the charge and discharge cycles the vehicle demands. We always check your vehicle specification before fitting.
Signs Your Car Battery Is Failing
Most battery failures give warning signs well before they leave you stranded. If you recognise any of these, book a free battery test before the problem gets worse.
Slow engine crank
The engine turns over slowly or sounds laboured when you start. This is the most common early sign that a battery is losing capacity. Do not ignore it, as it often means one cold morning away from a complete failure.
Battery warning light
The battery symbol on your dashboard indicates a charging system fault. This could be the battery, the alternator or a wiring issue. We test both the battery and charging system to find the real cause rather than guessing.
Dim headlights at idle
If your headlights brighten when you rev the engine but are noticeably dim at idle, the battery may no longer be holding enough charge to support the vehicle's electrical demand when the alternator output is low.
Electrical gremlins
Intermittent faults with the radio, central locking, electric windows or dashboard displays can all be caused by a battery that cannot maintain a stable voltage. These issues often come and go, making them harder to diagnose without a proper load test.
Frequent jump starts needed
Needing a jump start more than once in a short period is a clear sign the battery is no longer holding charge. Jump starting may get you moving but it does not fix the underlying problem, and each deep discharge further reduces battery life.
Battery over five years old
Battery age alone is not a reason to replace, but a battery over five years old that has not been tested recently is worth checking. Capacity drops gradually and many batteries fail with little warning once they pass this point. A quick load test gives you certainty.

Stop-Start Cars Need a Different Battery
Fitting a standard battery in a stop-start vehicle is one of the most common battery fitting mistakes. It looks fine at first, then fails far sooner than expected.
Why stop-start systems wear out standard batteries
A stop-start system cuts the engine every time you stop in traffic and restarts it the moment you pull away. In a typical urban commute, this can mean dozens of engine restarts in a single journey. A standard lead-acid battery is designed for one start per journey, not fifty.
- EFB batteries are built for basic stop-start systems. They handle repeated cycling without the rapid capacity loss a standard battery would suffer.
- AGM batteries are required on vehicles with advanced stop-start, brake energy recuperation or high electrical demands. Fitting EFB instead of AGM on these vehicles will also shorten battery life.
- We always check your vehicle spec before recommending a battery, not just what was fitted before. A previous owner may already have fitted the wrong type.
- The battery management system (BMS) on modern stop-start vehicles monitors battery health and must be reset after a replacement so the car charges the new battery correctly.
Affected vehicles include: most BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Skoda, SEAT, Ford (Ecoboost and EcoBlue engines), Vauxhall, Renault, Peugeot, Citroen and many others built from around 2010 onwards. If your car has an auto stop-start button, it almost certainly needs an EFB or AGM battery.

Battery Registration and BMS Reset
On many modern vehicles, fitting a new battery is not enough. Without a BMS reset, your new battery may be incorrectly charged from day one.
Why the battery management system matters
Modern vehicles, particularly those with stop-start or energy recuperation, use a Battery Management System (BMS) to monitor the battery's age, charge history and overall health. The BMS uses this data to control how the alternator charges the battery.
When an old battery is replaced, the BMS still thinks it is managing an aged, partially-degraded battery. It will continue charging at levels appropriate for the old battery, which typically means undercharging a brand new one. Over time this shortens the new battery's life and can cause the stop-start system to stop working.
- Battery registration tells the BMS that a new battery has been fitted and resets its learned charge history to zero.
- Diagnostic equipment is required. This is not a procedure a multimeter or basic code reader can perform. It requires manufacturer-level software or a professional scan tool.
- Commonly needed on: BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen Group vehicles, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover and many others. The procedure varies by make and model.
- We include the BMS reset as part of the fitting process on all vehicles where it is required, using professional diagnostic equipment.

Why Car Batteries Fail
Batteries rarely fail without a reason. Understanding the cause helps prevent the same thing happening to the replacement.
Short journeys
This is the most common cause of premature battery failure in urban areas like Aldershot. The alternator needs about 20 to 30 minutes of driving to replace the energy used during a cold start. If most journeys are short, the battery slowly runs deeper and deeper into deficit, accelerating wear. Stop-start systems make this worse because they demand even more from the battery.
Cold weather
Low temperatures reduce the chemical activity inside a battery, cutting its ability to deliver starting current. A battery that performs adequately in summer may fall below the threshold needed to start the engine on a cold morning. Cold weather does not cause failure directly, but it exposes a battery that was already weakened. Winter is the most common season for battery-related breakdowns.
Parasitic drain
A small number of vehicle systems stay active when the engine is off, such as the alarm, clock and ECU memory. This is normal. However, a fault in an electrical component, a phone charger left plugged in, or a light that stays on can cause a much higher than normal current draw that drains the battery overnight. If your car repeatedly goes flat when parked, we can trace parasitic drains with diagnostic equipment.
Battery age and sulfation
Lead-acid batteries lose capacity gradually as lead sulfate crystals form on the plates over time. This is a natural process that accelerates if the battery is regularly left in a partially discharged state. Once sulfation is advanced, it cannot be reversed. Age is not a reliable guide on its own, but a battery that has never been tested and is approaching five or more years old is worth checking.
Alternator fault
The alternator charges the battery while the engine runs. If it develops a fault, the battery gradually depletes with each journey. Symptoms mirror those of a failing battery, which is why we always test the alternator output alongside the battery. Replacing just the battery when the alternator is at fault means the new battery will go flat too.
Wrong battery specification
Fitting a battery with insufficient cold cranking amps, the wrong case size, or the wrong type for a stop-start vehicle puts it under immediate stress. Even a brand new battery will fail prematurely if it is not matched to the vehicle's electrical demands. This is why we always verify the specification before fitting, rather than just matching the physical dimensions.

Battery Fitting Done Properly
We do not swap batteries without testing. We do not fit the wrong type. We do not skip the BMS reset. These are the steps that separate a proper battery job from a cheap one.
- Free battery load test first. We test before we sell. If your battery is still serviceable, we will tell you rather than push a replacement you do not need.
- AGM, EFB and standard batteries in stock. We carry all three types so your car always gets the correct specification, not whatever happens to be available.
- BMS reset included where required. We use professional diagnostic equipment to register the new battery with your vehicle's battery management system. Most quick-fit operations skip this step entirely.
- Full charging system check. We test the alternator alongside the battery. If the alternator is the real problem, we will say so before you pay for a new battery that will simply go flat again.
- RAC approved garage. Independent accreditation means our standards are independently verified, not just self-declared.
- Old battery disposed of responsibly. Lead-acid batteries require specialist recycling. We handle this at no extra charge so it never becomes your problem.

Jump Starting Safely and What to Do Next
A jump start gets you moving but it does not fix the underlying problem. Here is how to do it safely and what it means for your battery.
Safe jump start procedure
Modern vehicles with multiple ECUs and sensitive electronics can be damaged by an incorrect jump start. Follow the correct cable order every time.
- 1 Red cable to flat battery positive (+) terminal first.
- 2 Red cable to donor battery positive (+) on the working vehicle.
- 3 Black cable to donor battery negative (-) on the working vehicle.
- 4 Black cable to an unpainted metal earth point on the flat vehicle, away from the battery. Never clip directly to the flat battery negative.
- 5 Start the donor vehicle, wait two minutes, then start the flat vehicle. Remove cables in reverse order.
After a jump start
A jump start is a temporary fix. Once you get the car running, drive for at least 20 to 30 minutes on a faster road to allow the alternator to recharge the battery. Do not switch the engine off until you reach your destination.
When you arrive, book a free battery load test as soon as possible. A battery that went flat once may still hold charge. One that goes flat repeatedly is telling you it has reached the end of its life.
Also note that jump starting some modern vehicles can trigger fault codes. If warning lights appear after a jump start, a diagnostic scan will clear confirmed codes and identify anything that needs attention.
Always check your handbook first. Some vehicles have the battery in the boot or under a seat. Many have remote positive and negative jump points under the bonnet even when the battery is elsewhere. Connecting to the wrong point can damage sensitive electronics.
Car Battery FAQs
Questions we hear from Aldershot drivers every week, answered honestly.
The most common signs are slow engine cranking when you turn the key, a battery warning light on the dashboard, headlights that dim at low revs, electrical features behaving erratically, and a battery that has not been tested in five or more years. A free battery load test gives you a definitive answer rather than a guess.
Standard lead-acid batteries suit conventional vehicles without stop-start. EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) is designed for vehicles with basic stop-start systems and handles repeated cycling better than a standard battery. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) is required on vehicles with advanced stop-start, brake energy recuperation or high electrical loads. Fitting the wrong type on a stop-start vehicle will shorten battery life significantly.
Stop-start systems cut and restart the engine at every set of lights, potentially dozens of times per journey. A standard battery is designed for one cold start per journey, not fifty. EFB and AGM batteries are engineered to handle this cycle count without losing capacity prematurely. Using a standard battery in a stop-start vehicle will wear it out far more quickly and can cause the stop-start function to stop working.
On many modern vehicles, yes. The battery management system (BMS) tracks the battery's age and charge history to control how the alternator charges it. After a replacement, the BMS must be reset so it treats the new battery correctly rather than continuing to manage it as an aged unit. We include this step using professional diagnostic equipment on all vehicles where it is required.
Most battery replacements take 30 to 45 minutes including the pre-fit load test and any BMS reset required. Vehicles with awkwardly located batteries or additional coding steps may take a little longer. We will confirm the time when you book.
Battery lifespan depends heavily on how the car is used. Vehicles used mainly for short local journeys tend to wear batteries out faster because the alternator cannot fully recharge the battery between starts. A battery health test gives you an accurate picture of remaining capacity rather than relying on age alone, which is not always a reliable indicator.
Not always. A flat or failing battery is the most common cause, but a faulty alternator, starter motor or parasitic electrical drain can cause identical symptoms. We always test the battery and charging system together so we do not replace a battery that is actually fine. If the alternator is undercharging, fitting a new battery will not solve the problem.
Cold temperatures reduce the chemical activity inside a battery, cutting its available starting power. A battery that holds charge adequately in summer may not deliver enough current to start the engine on a cold morning. Cold weather does not cause failure by itself, but it exposes a battery that was already weakened by age or short-journey use. If your car struggles to start in cold weather, book a free battery test.
