What Is Wheel Balancing?
No wheel and tyre is ever perfectly uniform, there's always a slightly heavier point somewhere around it. Balancing corrects that by adding small counterweights so the wheel spins evenly at speed, instead of vibrating.
- Static balance - weight distributed evenly around the wheel's circumference, so it doesn't bounce up and down as it spins.
- Dynamic balance - weight distributed evenly across the wheel's width too, preventing side-to-side wobble at higher speeds. Modern balancing machines check both at once.
- Wheel weights - small counterweights clipped or stuck to the rim to correct the imbalance. We use the correct type for your wheel, adhesive for alloys where clip-on weights would mark the finish, clip-on where that's the standard fit.
Balancing is checked on a calibrated machine that spins the wheel and measures exactly where weight needs adding, it isn't something that can be judged reliably by eye or feel alone.
Signs Your Wheels Need Balancing
Unbalanced wheels tend to announce themselves clearly, here's what to watch and feel for.
Vibration through the wheel or seat
The classic symptom. Usually most noticeable in a specific speed range, often 50-70mph, easing off above or below it.
Uneven or scalloped tyre wear
Persistent imbalance wears tyres unevenly over time, sometimes creating a scalloped or cupped wear pattern.
A humming or droning noise
A constant noise that changes with speed, rather than road surface, often points to a balance issue rather than the tyre itself.
Steering feels vague at speed
Imbalance can make the car feel less planted or slightly wandering the faster you go, easing at lower speeds.
Just had a new tyre fitted?
New tyres should always be balanced as part of fitting. If you notice vibration afterwards, it's worth a quick recheck.
Lost a wheel weight recently?
Weights can occasionally come loose over time or after a kerb strike, if one falls off, vibration usually follows quickly.

What Happens If You Ignore It?
Vibration is more than just annoying, left long enough it causes real mechanical wear.

Tyres wear unevenly
Constant micro-bouncing from an unbalanced wheel wears tread inconsistently, shortening the life of an otherwise good tyre.
Bearings and shocks take the hit
Persistent vibration transmits through to wheel bearings and shock absorbers, components that are far more expensive to replace than a wheel weight.
Fuel efficiency drops
An unbalanced wheel doesn't roll as cleanly, adding a small but real drag that costs you at the pump over time.
Driving comfort and confidence
A smooth, vibration-free ride isn't just comfort, less fatigue and a more predictable-feeling car matters on longer drives.

Inspection
We check each tyre and wheel for wear, damage or debris that could be throwing off the balance before testing.
Machine balancing
Each wheel is spun on a calibrated balancing machine, which measures exactly where weight needs adding, then the correct weights are fitted.
Road test & final check
We road test where needed to confirm the vibration is gone, then a final check before you drive away.
Wheel Balancing vs Wheel Alignment
These two get mixed up constantly, but they fix different problems. Here's the plain difference.
| Question | Wheel Balancing | Wheel Alignment |
|---|---|---|
| What it fixes | Uneven weight around the wheel and tyre | The direction your wheels point |
| Main symptom | Vibration through the steering wheel or seat | Car pulling, uneven tyre wear |
| When it's needed | Every new tyre fit, or if you feel vibration at speed | After a pothole, kerb strike, or worn suspension |
| Typically checked | Whenever a tyre is changed, or vibration appears | Yearly, or every 6,000-10,000 miles |
Not sure which one you need? Vibration usually points to balancing, pulling or uneven wear usually points to alignment, and sometimes a car needs both. Read our full guide to wheel alignment in Aldershot, or just tell us your symptoms when you call and we'll advise honestly.
