Understanding the job

What Is a Cambelt and Why It Matters

A cambelt keeps your engine's crankshaft and camshaft turning in exact sync, and that timing is what stops the moving parts inside the engine from colliding with each other.

As the engine runs, the crankshaft drives the pistons up and down while the camshaft opens and closes the valves. The belt is what keeps those two systems moving in step, thousands of times a minute, at exactly the right moment relative to each other.

Not every engine uses a rubber cambelt. Some use a metal timing chain instead, which generally lasts a lot longer than a belt and doesn't sit on a fixed replacement schedule in the same way. A cambelt, by contrast, is a wear item. It's made of reinforced rubber, and rubber degrades over time and use, which is why manufacturers set a replacement interval for it in the first place.

This isn't a part you can judge by eye during a quick look under the bonnet. It sits behind a cover, driven at a fixed point in the engine's timing, and the only reliable way to know its condition is to know when it was last replaced and what your vehicle's guidance says.

  • Keeps the crankshaft and camshaft turning in exact sync
  • A wear item made of reinforced rubber, unlike a metal timing chain
  • Condition can't be judged by eye, only by knowing when it was last replaced

Does My Car Have a Cambelt or a Chain

Whether your car has a cambelt or a timing chain depends on the engine, not the brand as a whole, so it's not something to guess from the make and model alone.

The same manufacturer can use a belt in one engine and a chain in another, sometimes even across different versions of the same model, so there's no shortcut list that reliably tells you which one you've got.

  • Check your handbook, which usually states whether the engine is belt or chain driven
  • Check your service history, which will show a cambelt replacement if one has ever been carried out
  • Not sure? Give us your registration or engine code and we'll confirm it before you book anything in

If your car does have a timing chain rather than a belt, this job isn't relevant to your vehicle, and we'd tell you that plainly rather than carry out work it doesn't need.

What's Included in the Job

A cambelt replacement at GForce Tyres covers more than just the belt itself, because of how the job is physically carried out.

Once we're in to do the work, it makes sense to deal with everything in that area at the same time rather than leave worn parts in place.

Cambelt or timing belt kit

The belt itself, replaced as a full kit rather than in isolation.

Tensioners and idler pulleys

These keep the correct tension on the belt and guide it around its path. They're replaced alongside the belt because they wear at a similar rate and sit right there in the same assembly.

Water pump

On many engines, the water pump is driven by the same belt and sits in the same area of the engine, meaning the labour needed to access it is largely the same labour needed to access the belt. Where that's the case, we'll usually recommend replacing it at the same time.

Auxiliary belt check and timing alignment

Where relevant to your engine, we'll check the condition of the auxiliary belt while access is open, and once the new components are fitted, the engine's timing is set and calibrated correctly before the job is signed off.

Want to know exactly what your car needs? We'll assess the kit, tensioners and water pump together.

Schedule driven, not symptom driven

When Should a Cambelt Be Replaced

Cambelt replacement is scheduled work, done ahead of failure, not something to wait on until there's a sign of trouble.

Manufacturers set a recommended replacement interval for each engine, expressed as a mileage and a time period, and that interval varies significantly from one make, model and engine to the next. There's no single figure that applies across the board, which is why we won't quote you a generic number without knowing your vehicle.

  • Check your handbook or service history first. A stamped cambelt replacement tells you when the clock last reset
  • Not sure, or bought without full history? We can confirm the correct interval from your registration or engine code

We'll confirm your interval

The reason this matters more than it might seem is straightforward. Most cambelt failures happen with no warning at all. The belt doesn't usually squeal, judder or give you an early sign that something's wrong. It runs normally right up until it doesn't. That's precisely why replacement is done on a schedule rather than in response to symptoms, and why "it sounded fine last week" isn't a useful test.

Not sure when yours is due? We'll confirm your correct interval from your reg or engine code.

What Happens If It Fails

If a cambelt snaps while the engine is running, what happens next depends on whether your engine is an interference or non-interference design.

Interference engine

On an interference engine, the pistons and valves occupy the same physical space at different points in the timing cycle, kept apart only by that precise synchronisation. If the belt fails, the timing is lost instantly, and the pistons can collide with the valves, which typically causes serious internal engine damage.

Non-interference engine

On a non-interference engine, the pistons and valves don't share the same space, so a snapped belt won't cause that kind of collision. The engine will simply stop running, since it can no longer maintain its timing, but the internal components are less likely to be damaged by the failure itself.

Either way, the car stops

A snapped cambelt means the car stops. On an interference engine, it can also mean a repair bill that's a different order of magnitude to the cost of replacing the belt on schedule. We can tell you which type your engine is when we confirm your replacement interval.

How We Carry Out a Cambelt Replacement

Every cambelt job follows the same careful sequence, so nothing is rushed and the timing is verified before the car goes back to you.

1. Timing inspection and locking

We check the engine's current timing marks and lock the crankshaft and camshaft in position, which is the reference point everything else in the job is set against.

2. Removal and water pump check

The old belt, tensioners and pulleys are removed. As they come off, we check for any signs of oil or coolant leaks in the area, and assess the condition of the water pump to confirm whether it needs replacing alongside the belt.

3. New kit fitted and timing calibrated

The new cambelt kit is installed, along with the water pump if it's being replaced, and the engine's timing is calibrated precisely against the locked reference points from step one.

4. Road test

Once everything is fitted and torqued to spec, we road test the car to confirm it's running correctly before it goes back to you.

A cambelt job takes longer than routine service work because of the access involved, since reaching the front of the engine to do this properly isn't a quick task.

How Cambelt Pricing Works

We don't publish a fixed price for cambelt replacement, because the job varies too much from one vehicle to the next to make a single number honest.

What's involved depends on your specific engine, whether the water pump and tensioners need replacing alongside the belt, and how accessible that part of the engine is on your particular model. We inspect your vehicle and confirm the correct kit and interval before giving you a written quote, so you know exactly what you're paying for and why.

It's worth being upfront about why cambelt work tends to cost more than many other jobs. Two things drive that. First, the labour is intensive, because reaching the front of the engine to access the belt, tensioners and pulleys takes time, regardless of the vehicle. Second, we commonly bundle the water pump and tensioners into the same job, and while that adds to the parts cost, it's more cost effective for you overall than paying for that same labour access twice, once now and again later when the water pump eventually needs doing on its own.

  • Inspection and interval check first, always, before anything is quoted
  • Written quote covering parts and labour before work starts
  • Water pump and tensioners bundled in when it makes sense, explained clearly
  • Second opinions welcome on a dealer or other garage quote

Cambelt Replacement FAQs

Anything else, just call the workshop, we're happy to talk it through.

We don't publish a fixed price, because the job depends on your specific vehicle, whether the water pump and tensioners need replacing alongside the belt, and how the engine is laid out. We inspect the car first and give you a written quote before any work starts.
It depends on the engine rather than the make as a whole, so check your handbook or service history first. If you're not sure, give us your registration or engine code and we'll confirm it for you.
Check your handbook or service history for the manufacturer's recommended interval, or ask us to confirm it from your vehicle's registration or engine code. Don't wait for a warning sign before booking it in, because most cambelt failures happen without one.
On an interference engine, the pistons and valves can collide when the timing is lost, which typically causes serious internal damage. On a non-interference engine, the car simply stops running without that risk of collision. Either way, the car won't be driveable.
Two reasons. The labour is intensive because of how much access is needed to reach the front of the engine, and we often bundle in the water pump and tensioners, since replacing them while that access is already open is more cost effective than paying for the same labour twice.
Where it's appropriate for your engine, yes. It commonly shares the same drive belt and sits in the same area, so it makes sense to replace it alongside the cambelt rather than separately later. We'll confirm whether this applies to your vehicle during inspection.
It's not a specific MOT test item and isn't a legal requirement in itself. What matters is the consequence of it failing, which can be severe on an interference engine, so it's worth keeping on schedule regardless of the MOT.
