What Is a Class 4 MOT

A Class 4 MOT is the standard annual safety test for cars, taxis, small vans and motor caravans in the UK. It checks that your vehicle meets the legal minimum standards for safety and emissions before you're allowed to keep driving it on the road.

It's the test class that applies to the overwhelming majority of vehicles on UK roads. If you drive a hatchback, saloon, estate, small hybrid or electric car, a car-derived van, or a motor caravan, Class 4 is almost certainly the test you need. It's different from a Class 7 MOT, which covers larger vans and light goods vehicles between 3,000kg and 3,500kg.

  • Covers cars, taxis, small vans and motor caravans
  • Required every year once your car turns three
  • Different from a Class 7 MOT, which covers heavier vans

Which Vehicles Qualify for a Class 4 MOT

Your vehicle falls under Class 4 if it's one of the following:

Cars and passenger vehicles

Cars and private passenger vehicles with up to 8 passenger seats.

Small minibuses

Private passenger vehicles with 9 to 12 passenger seats, including some minibuses.

Light goods vans

Light goods vehicles and vans up to 3,000kg design gross weight.

Motor caravans

Motor caravans and dual purpose vehicles.

Taxis and private hire

Taxis and private hire vehicles.

Ambulances

Ambulances are tested under Class 4.

Three-wheeled vehicles

Three-wheeled vehicles over 450kg unladen weight.

If you're not sure which class applies to your vehicle, check the weight and seat details on your V5C logbook, or call us and we'll confirm before you book. Getting this wrong wastes a trip, since a Class 7 vehicle can't be tested against Class 4 rules and vice versa.

Not sure which class your vehicle needs? Call us and we'll confirm.

What a Class 4 MOT Actually Checks

A Class 4 test examines your vehicle against a fixed set of categories set by the DVSA. Our testers go through each of the following:

Brakes

Pedal operation, handbrake performance, brake wear, fluid condition and warning lights.

Suspension

Shock absorbers, springs, joints and general condition under load.

Steering

Steering wheel play, power steering operation, mechanical condition of the steering column and linkages.

Tyres and wheels

Tread depth, damage, correct size and type, wheel bearing condition.

Lights and electrical equipment

Headlamps, indicators, brake lights, position lamps, aim and function of all lighting, plus visible wiring.

Visibility

Windscreen condition and wiper function, driver's field of view, mirrors.

Seatbelts and restraints

Condition, operation and anchorage of every seatbelt fitted.

Structure and bodywork

Chassis condition, corrosion in structural areas, exhaust mounting, bumpers, doors and boot.

Emissions

Exhaust emissions against the limits for your vehicle's fuel type and age.

Registration plates, VIN and identification

Plate legibility and correct format, VIN present and legible.

This is not a mechanical service and doesn't cover engine performance, gearbox condition or general wear items that aren't safety related. If a fault is found that isn't an MOT failure but is worth knowing about, our testers will flag it as an advisory rather than fail the car for it.

Know before you go

Common Class 4 MOT Fail Reasons

Most Class 4 failures come down to a small number of recurring items rather than anything unusual. DVSA testing data has consistently shown lighting and electrical faults, such as a blown bulb or misaligned headlamp, as the single biggest cause of Class 4 failures nationally, followed by suspension, brakes and tyres. Bald tyres, worn brake pads, cracked windscreens outside the wiper sweep area and non-functioning number plate lights are among the items we see fail most often on cars coming through our centre.

01

Lights & electrical

Biggest cause of fails nationally.

02

Suspension

Worn components under load.

03

Brakes

Pad wear and fluid condition.

04

Tyres

Bald or damaged tread.

05

Windscreen & wipers

Cracks in the wiper sweep area.

Most of these are quick and inexpensive to fix before your test, which is why a five minute check of lights, tyre tread and wiper blades the day before your appointment is worth doing.

A new car ready for its first Class 4 MOT
Three years, then annual

First MOT for a New Car

A car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of the date it was first registered in Great Britain. You can book it up to one month minus a day before that date and the test will still count from the original due date, so you don't lose any time. After the first test, the car needs a Class 4 MOT every year from then on.

  • If your car isn't three years old yet, you don't need to book one.
  • If you're within that final month, book it now rather than leaving it to the last few days.
  • For the exact rule as it applies in Northern Ireland, check gov.uk directly, since the timing works differently there.

Coming up to your first MOT? Book it in good time.

What Happens at Your Class 4 MOT Appointment

A Class 4 MOT at GForce follows the same structure every time, so you know what to expect when you arrive:

1. Check in

Bring your car to Unit 25, Blackwater Way at your booked time. Our tester takes your details and confirms the registration. No paperwork needed, just the vehicle and the keys.

2. The test itself

The tester works through brakes, suspension, steering, tyres, lights, seatbelts, structure and emissions in a fixed sequence, both on the ramp and on a short road test where needed.

3. Results

A pass, fail or pass with advisories is logged straight to the national MOT database. Your certificate is printed and the result is visible on the gov.uk MOT history checker within minutes.

4. If it fails

We'll call you and explain exactly what needs fixing, with a quote on the spot if you want the work done with us.

A Class 4 test typically takes 45 to 60 minutes from start to finish. We offer while you wait testing, so most customers don't need to leave the vehicle with us.

Retest Policy

If your car fails and needs repair work, bring it back to us before the end of the next working day and we'll retest the failed items free of charge, as long as the vehicle hasn't left our premises in the meantime or has only been used to go directly to get the fault fixed. Beyond that window, a free or reduced cost partial retest is available up to 10 working days after the original test, covering only the items that failed. After 10 working days, a full retest is needed.

Common Questions About Class 4 MOT Testing

Anything else, just call the workshop, we're happy to talk it through.

Class 4 covers cars, taxis, motor caravans and vans up to 3,000kg design gross weight. Class 7 covers goods vehicles between 3,000kg and 3,500kg, typically larger transit-style vans. Check the weight shown on your V5C logbook if you're not sure.
Yes. You're allowed to drive an untaxed vehicle to a pre-booked MOT appointment and directly back home afterwards, as long as the test is booked in advance.
You'll be given a full list of the failed items. You can have the work done with us or elsewhere, then bring the car back for a retest. If it's brought back to us by the end of the next working day, the retest on those specific items is free.
Yes. Electric and hybrid cars still need an annual Class 4 MOT once they're three years old, covering the same safety categories as a petrol or diesel car, though the emissions check differs for electric vehicles since there's no exhaust to test.
Most Class 4 tests take between 45 and 60 minutes. We offer while you wait appointments so you don't have to leave the car with us.
No paperwork is required. Just bring the vehicle itself at your booked time. The result is recorded electronically and checked against your registration automatically.
Yes. Motor caravans and dual purpose vehicles are tested under Class 4, using the same inspection categories as a standard car.
A fail means an item doesn't meet the legal minimum standard and must be fixed before the car can pass. An advisory flags something worth monitoring or likely to need attention soon, but it doesn't stop the car passing this year.
