What Is a Flywheel?
The flywheel is a heavy rotating disc connected to your engine's crankshaft, sitting between the engine and the clutch.
- Maintains engine balance - smoothing out the pulses from each engine cycle.
- Transfers power to the clutch - and on to your gearbox and wheels.
- Absorbs vibration - especially important on diesel and turbocharged engines.
- Assists gear engagement - helping gear changes feel smooth rather than jerky.
Most modern cars use a dual mass flywheel (DMF), a more complex design with an internal spring and damper mechanism built in to absorb even more vibration than a traditional solid flywheel.
Signs You Need Flywheel Replacement
Catching these early usually means a simpler, less costly repair.
Rattle at idle
A rattling noise when the engine is idling, that often quietens when you press the clutch pedal down.
Vibrations when driving
A noticeable vibration through the pedal, gearstick or cabin, especially at low speed or when pulling away.
Clutch slipping
Engine revs rising without matching acceleration, or a clutch that feels like it's not fully engaging.
Grinding when changing gear
A grinding or crunching noise during gear changes that isn't there normally.
Burning smell
A burning smell from the clutch area, often a sign of excess heat from slipping or wear.
Difficulty starting
Trouble starting the vehicle can sometimes be linked to flywheel wear affecting the starter ring gear.
Is It Your Flywheel, Clutch, or Engine Mount?
These three faults can feel similar, but the symptoms usually point to one more than the others.

These are useful clues, not a certain diagnosis. We'll check it properly on the car before recommending any work, so you're not paying for guesswork.
DMF vs Solid Flywheel Conversion
Converting a dual mass flywheel to a solid one is technically possible, but we don't generally recommend it for everyday driven cars.
- Like-for-like DMF replacement - matches your car's original design and keeps vibration levels as the manufacturer intended.
- Solid flywheel conversion - can increase vibration and noise, particularly at idle, and add extra stress to the gearbox, especially on turbocharged or diesel engines.
- Where conversion can make sense - specialist or motorsport applications, not typically a daily-driven road car.
- We won't push a conversion on you - we'll explain the trade-offs honestly and let you decide.
A dual mass flywheel generally can't be meaningfully resurfaced either, the wear is usually internal to the spring and damper mechanism, not just the surface, so we replace rather than resurface to make sure the job is done properly.
