Understanding your exhaust system

What Is a Diesel Particulate Filter?

A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is fitted to the exhaust system of diesel vehicles to capture soot particles produced by combustion before they can escape into the atmosphere.

The DPF is designed to clean itself through a process called regeneration, where accumulated soot is burned off at high temperature. When regeneration cannot complete, soot builds up and the filter eventually blocks.

Not all deposits can be burned away. Soot is combustible and can be cleared by regeneration. Ash is not. Ash is the incombustible residue from engine oil additives that accumulates permanently over time. High ash loading is what eventually requires professional cleaning or filter replacement, regardless of how many regeneration cycles the vehicle runs.

  • Diesel cars and vans fitted with a DPF since Euro 5 emission standards (from around 2009 onwards).
  • Short journeys and city driving are the most common cause of DPF blockages, as exhaust temperatures rarely get high enough for passive regeneration.
  • A blocked DPF left untreated can cause limp mode, rising fuel consumption, and eventually expensive engine damage.

Signs to watch for

Warning Signs Your DPF Needs Attention

A blocked DPF rarely gives no warning at all. These are the most common signs that your filter needs professional attention.

DPF warning light on the dashboard

The orange DPF light (often a dotted rectangle shape) means soot levels have reached the threshold where the car has tried to regenerate and failed. Do not ignore it.

Reduced power or limp mode

A severely blocked DPF can trigger the engine management system to enter limp mode, limiting power and speed to protect the engine from further damage.

Higher fuel consumption

When the DPF is partially blocked, the engine has to work harder. You may notice noticeably more trips to the fuel pump before any other warning signs appear.

Excessive smoke from the exhaust

White or dark smoke during a regeneration attempt, or smoke that persists beyond normal warm-up, can indicate the DPF is struggling to burn off accumulated deposits.

Engine management warning light

A check engine light alongside DPF symptoms often points to a fault code related to DPF pressure sensors, regeneration failure, or a linked issue such as a faulty EGR valve.

Stop/start system not working

Many vehicles disable the stop/start system automatically when the DPF is in an active regeneration cycle or when soot levels are too high, to maintain exhaust temperature.

The most important thing your garage won't explain

Passive, Active and Forced DPF Regeneration

There are three types of DPF regeneration and most drivers have never been told how they differ. Understanding them helps you know when you have a genuine problem and what kind of help you need.

Passive regeneration

Happens automatically when exhaust temperatures are naturally high enough to burn off soot, typically during sustained motorway or dual carriageway driving. No driver action needed. Many short-journey drivers never complete a passive regen cycle, which is why city driving is the biggest cause of DPF problems.

Active regeneration

Triggered automatically by the vehicle's ECU when soot levels reach a set threshold. The ECU injects extra fuel into the exhaust to raise temperatures and burn off soot. You may notice a slight smell or the engine idling slightly rough. Active regen typically lasts 5 to 10 minutes. If you turn the engine off mid-cycle, it will restart next time you drive. Repeated interruptions allow soot to accumulate further.

Forced regeneration

A garage-only process using diagnostic equipment to trigger a controlled regeneration cycle when active regen has failed or cannot complete. The vehicle must be stationary with the engine running at a controlled speed. Forced regen burns off soot deposits but cannot remove ash. If ash loading is the primary problem, an on-vehicle chemical clean or off-vehicle ultrasonic clean is required.

Why forced regen alone is sometimes not enough

Soot is combustible and clears with heat. Ash is not. If your DPF has high ash loading from engine oil residue built up over many thousands of miles, no amount of regeneration will remove it. The ash physically occupies filter volume and cannot be burned off. When ash is the problem, only off-vehicle cleaning or filter replacement can restore performance.

The right tool for the job

DPF Cleaning Methods Compared

We use all three cleaning approaches at GForce. Which one we recommend depends entirely on what your diagnostic scan shows, not on what costs the most.

Method What it removes Typical time When we use it
Forced regeneration Soot deposits only 30 to 60 minutes First-line treatment when soot levels are high but ash loading is low and no physical damage is present. Active regen failed or could not complete.
Chemical clean (on-vehicle) Soot and moderate ash deposits 1 to 2 hours When forced regen alone is unlikely to be enough, or when ash loading is moderate. Specialist cleaning fluid is introduced while the filter remains on the vehicle.
Ultrasonic clean (off-vehicle) Soot, ash and stubborn deposits throughout the substrate Half a day For severely blocked DPFs where chemical cleaning on the vehicle is not sufficient. The filter is removed, cleaned thoroughly in an ultrasonic bath, flow-tested, and refitted.

Every DPF job starts with a diagnostic scan. We read the fault codes and assess actual DPF soot and ash loading levels before recommending a method, so you are never sold a more expensive process than your filter actually needs.

Not all particulate filters are the same

FAP Systems and Petrol Particulate Filters

We work on FAP-equipped Peugeots and Citroens as well as GPF-fitted petrol cars. Neither is a standard DPF job, and not every garage knows the difference.

FAP systems (Peugeot, Citroen, DS)

FAP stands for Filtre a Particules, the Peugeot and Citroen terminology for their diesel particulate filter system. FAP systems use Eolys fluid, a cerium-based additive stored in a separate tank, to lower the temperature required for regeneration. This means FAP systems regenerate at lower exhaust temperatures than standard DPFs.

When we service a FAP system, we always check the Eolys additive level and top it up if needed. Without the correct additive, the system cannot regenerate properly and the FAP will block more frequently.

Standard DPF (most diesel vehicles)

Most diesel cars and vans sold since around 2009 use a standard DPF without an additive system. Regeneration relies entirely on exhaust temperature. Common across Ford, Vauxhall, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen, and most other makes.

Cleaning methods, forced regen, on-vehicle chemical, or off-vehicle ultrasonic, apply to standard DPF vehicles.

GPF (petrol cars, post-2017)

Since Euro 6d emission standards, many petrol direct-injection cars also carry a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF). The GPF traps soot from petrol combustion in the same way a DPF does for diesel. GPF blockages are less common than DPF issues but do occur, particularly in cars predominantly used for short urban journeys.

Affected makes include BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen, and others with direct-injection petrol engines. If your petrol car is showing particulate filter warnings, call us to discuss.

An honest answer

When DPF Cleaning Won't Work

We would rather tell you a clean cannot save your filter than charge you for a procedure that will not fix the problem.

After a diagnostic scan, we will advise if your DPF is beyond cleaning. Common conditions that make replacement the only option:

  • Cracked or melted substrate - physical damage to the ceramic filter structure cannot be repaired by any cleaning method.
  • Engine oil or coolant contamination - contamination from a head gasket failure or excessive oil burning coats the substrate and cannot be safely cleaned away.
  • Multiple failed regeneration attempts already - if forced regen has failed several times, the soot may have partially melted or fused, making cleaning impractical.
  • Extreme ash loading - if ash has accumulated to the point where off-vehicle ultrasonic cleaning cannot restore adequate flow, the filter needs replacing.

If replacement is needed, we will give you a clear, honest quote. We can also look at the root cause, whether that is a faulty EGR valve, injector wear, or driving pattern, to help avoid the same problem recurring with a new filter.

Important legal information

DPF removal is illegal and causes an automatic MOT failure

We do not remove DPFs. If you have been told a DPF delete is a solution to a blockage problem, it is not, legally or practically.

  • Automatic MOT failure. Any vehicle with a DPF removed or bypassed will fail its MOT at the emissions inspection. There is no exemption.
  • Criminal offence. Driving a vehicle on a public road without a required DPF carries a fine of up to £2,500 for a car and up to £2,500 for a van or light commercial.
  • Insurance invalidity. Most motor insurance policies exclude cover for vehicles that have been illegally modified. A DPF removal is a modification that contravenes construction and use regulations.
How it works

Our DPF Cleaning Process

Book and describe the symptoms

Call, WhatsApp, or book online. Tell us what warning lights are showing and how the car is driving. We will give you an honest initial assessment before you even arrive.

Diagnostic scan and assessment

We read your vehicle's fault codes and check actual DPF soot and ash loading levels using dealer-grade diagnostic equipment before recommending any cleaning method.

Method selected and explained

Based on your diagnostic results, we recommend the right cleaning method and explain exactly why. Forced regen, chemical, or ultrasonic, we choose what your specific DPF actually needs.

Clean, flow test and written result

We carry out the cleaning, then run a post-clean DPF flow test and give you a written before and after result so you can see exactly what has been achieved.

A fixed workshop, not a van with chemicals

Why Choose GForce for DPF Cleaning

We are an RAC approved independent garage on Blackwater Way with the equipment and premises to handle DPF jobs that mobile operators simply cannot.

  • All three cleaning methods available - forced regen, on-vehicle chemical and off-vehicle ultrasonic, so we always have the right option for your specific DPF condition.
  • Dealer-grade diagnostic equipment - we read fault codes and actual DPF soot and ash loading before recommending anything.
  • Written before and after flow test results - every cleaning job comes with documented results, not just a verbal assurance that it worked.
  • Root cause diagnosis included - a clean that does not address why the DPF blocked is a temporary fix. We look at EGR faults, injector condition, and driving pattern advice.
  • RAC approved garage - independently assessed and approved. Unit 25, Blackwater Way, Aldershot, a fixed premises you can visit, call, or return to.
  • Honest about replacement - if your DPF cannot be saved, we will tell you rather than charge you for a clean that will not work.
