Catch it before it fails

Common Warning Signs That Mean You Need a Car Repair

Cars almost always give a warning before something fails completely, and catching it early usually costs less than waiting for it to get worse.

You don't need to know what's wrong to bring your car in. You just need to notice that something's changed. These are the signs worth acting on.

  • A warning light on the dash. Engine, battery, oil, brake or ABS lights should never be left to run on. We'll read the fault code and tell you what it actually means.
  • Grinding, knocking or squealing. Brakes, bearings and suspension components almost always make noise before they fail outright.
  • The car won't start, or is slow to start. Often a battery, alternator or starter motor fault, and one of the most common reasons cars are brought to us.
  • A burning or fuel smell. Never something to drive on and hope it clears.
  • Vibration or shaking, especially under braking or at speed. Commonly a brake, wheel bearing or suspension issue.
  • Loss of power or rough running. Points at ignition, fuelling or an emissions related fault.
  • Fluid on the driveway. Oil, coolant or brake fluid leaks all need identifying, not just topping up.
  • The car pulls to one side. Usually brakes, tyres or suspension, and worth checking before your next MOT catches it as a fault.

How We Diagnose Before We Quote

GForce Tyres never starts repair work on a guess. Every job starts with a proper diagnosis so you know exactly what's wrong before you're asked to agree to anything.

1. Tell us what's happening

Call, WhatsApp or drop in and describe the noise, light or fault. If the car can't be driven, tell us and we'll talk through collection.

2. We inspect and diagnose

Our technicians examine the car and run diagnostics where needed, reading fault codes properly rather than clearing them and hoping. We find the actual cause, not just the symptom.

3. You get a clear, itemised quote

Before any repair work begins, you'll know what's wrong, what it takes to fix it, and what it costs. No work starts without your agreement.

4. We fix it and show you what changed

Once you've approved the quote, we carry out the repair and can talk you through what was replaced and why.

If we find something else while we're in there, we'll call you before touching it, not after.

Tell us what's happening. We'll diagnose it properly before we quote.

How Repair Costs Work

Car repair costs vary by fault, part and vehicle, so GForce Tyres quotes every repair individually after diagnosis rather than publishing a fixed price list.

Unlike an MOT, which has a fixed maximum fee set by the DVSA, repairs don't work on a set scale. The cost of a brake job on a small hatchback is nothing like the cost of a clutch replacement on a larger diesel, and two cars with the same fault can need different parts. That's why we don't publish a fixed "from" price for repairs, and we'd be wary of any garage that does before they've looked at your car.

  • Diagnosis first, always, before anything is quoted
  • Clear, written quote covering parts and labour before work starts
  • No surprises added part way through the job
  • Second opinions welcome. Bring a dealer or other garage quote and we'll give you an honest read on whether it looks right

Worth knowing

Repair or Replace: Is It Worth Fixing an Older Car?

Whether it's worth repairing an older car depends on the cost of the fix against the car's value and how much life is left in the rest of it, not on age alone.

It's a fair question, and one we get asked often. A car with a big repair bill isn't automatically not worth fixing. What matters is comparing the cost of the repair to what the car is worth, and whether the rest of the vehicle is sound. A car that's otherwise reliable with one significant fault is usually worth repairing. A car that's racking up fault after fault, each one a few hundred pounds, is a different conversation.

  • A straight answer, not work pushed for the sake of it, because a customer who trusts our advice is a customer who comes back
  • If the car's sound and just due its next check, it's worth booking a full car service alongside the repair, so everything gets looked at in one visit

Car Repair FAQs

Anything else, just call the workshop, we're happy to talk it through.

Clutch replacement cost depends on the vehicle, the parts needed and whether the flywheel also needs replacing, so we always diagnose the car first and give you a written quote before starting work.
An engine warning light can be triggered by anything from a loose fuel cap to a more serious sensor or emissions fault. It's read using a diagnostic tool that tells us the actual fault code, so we can explain what it means rather than guess.
It depends on the cost of the repair against what the car is worth and the condition of the rest of the vehicle, not on age by itself. We'll give you an honest opinion rather than push work that isn't worth doing.
Yes. Diagnosis comes first, always. You'll get a clear explanation of what's wrong before you're asked to agree to any repair work.
If your car can't be driven to us, tell us when you call or WhatsApp and we'll talk through the options for getting it to the workshop.
It depends entirely on the fault. Some jobs, like a battery or brake pads, can be done same day. Others, like a gearbox or engine fault, take longer once parts are confirmed. We'll give you a timeframe once we've diagnosed the car.
Yes. We diagnose the fault, explain what's needed, and give you a clear quote before any repair work begins. Nothing extra is added without checking with you first.
Yes. Bring the quote in and we'll look at the car and give you a straight, honest read on whether the work is needed and whether the price looks right.
