Brakes are one system made up of several parts that all wear and fail differently, so a proper brake service means checking each of them, not just the ones that are easiest to see.
When people say "my brakes need doing," it usually means one of several different things. Pads worn down, discs scored or warped, a caliper sticking, a handbrake gone slack, or fluid that's overdue a change. We check the whole system on every visit, tell you plainly what's actually wrong, and only replace what needs replacing. Brakes almost always tell you something is wrong before they fail completely, and the specific noise or feeling usually points to a specific cause.
You don't need to know what's wrong before you call us, but it helps to know what you're describing. Here's what the most common brake symptoms usually mean.
Squealing when you brake
Often a wear indicator on the pad doing exactly what it's designed to do, telling you the pad is close to its limit. Can also be dust or glazing on the pad or disc surface.
Grinding or metal on metal noise
Usually means the pad material has worn through completely and the backing plate is now contacting the disc. This needs attention straight away, as it can damage the disc and reduce your stopping power.
A spongy or soft brake pedal
Commonly points to air or moisture in the brake fluid, or a fault in the hydraulic system. The pedal travels further than it should before the brakes bite.
Vibration or juddering when braking
Often caused by a warped or unevenly worn disc, particularly noticeable at higher speeds or under heavy braking.
The car pulls to one side under braking
Can point to a sticking caliper on one side, uneven pad wear, or occasionally a tyre or suspension issue working alongside the brakes.
Brakes feeling less effective than usual
Could be worn pads, warped discs, degraded brake fluid, or air in the system. Worth having checked before it gets worse.

Brake Warning Lights and ABS Warning Lights
The brake warning light and the ABS warning light are two different systems reporting two different kinds of problem, and it's worth knowing which one you're looking at.
Brake warning light
The brake warning light usually relates to the base braking system itself, most commonly low brake fluid level, worn pads triggering a sensor, or the handbrake being engaged. If it comes on while driving with the handbrake off, it needs checking promptly rather than left to run.
ABS warning light
The ABS warning light relates specifically to the anti-lock braking system, the part that stops your wheels locking under hard braking. A fault here doesn't usually mean your normal brakes have stopped working, but it does mean ABS won't be there to help if you need it. Faults are typically down to a wheel speed sensor, wiring, or the ABS control module, and need a proper diagnostic scan to identify.

Pads, discs, calipers, handbrake, fluid and, where needed, an ABS diagnostic scan. We find the actual cause, not just the symptom.
3. You get a clear, itemised quote
Before any repair work begins, you'll know what's wrong, what it takes to fix it, and what it costs.
4. We carry out the repair
Once you've approved the quote, we fix it and can talk you through what was replaced and why.
How Brake Repair Costs Work
Brake repair costs vary by vehicle, parts needed and how much work is involved, so GForce Tyres quotes every brake job individually after inspection rather than publishing a fixed price list.
A pad replacement on a small hatchback is nothing like the cost of pads and discs together on a larger vehicle, and two cars with similar symptoms can need different parts. That's why we don't publish a fixed "from" price for brake work, and we'd be wary of any garage that does before they've looked at your car.

Brakes and Your MOT
Brakes are one of the most common reasons a car fails or picks up an advisory at MOT, which makes them worth checking before your test rather than after.
Worn pads, scored discs, a weak handbrake or a leaking pipe can all show up as an MOT fault. If you're due a test, it's worth having your brakes looked at first.
