The basics

Why Pads and Discs Are Talked About Together

Pads and discs work as a pair, the pad presses against the disc to slow the car, so wear on one often affects the other and they're commonly inspected and replaced as a set.

That said, "pads and discs" doesn't automatically mean both need replacing every time. Pads wear faster and are checked more often, typically at every service. Discs last longer but can develop their own separate problems, like scoring or warping, that mean they need replacing even if the pads still have some life left.

  • Pads wear faster and are checked at every service
  • Discs last longer but can need replacing on their own, from scoring or warping
  • We inspect both properly and explain exactly what each part needs, not a blanket replace-everything approach

Not sure if you need pads, or pads and discs? We'll inspect both and give you a straight answer.

Signs Your Brake Pads Are Worn

Pad wear tends to show up in two ways.

A squealing noise when braking

Many pads have a built in wear indicator, a small metal tab that contacts the disc and squeals once the pad material gets thin. This is a deliberate warning, not a fault.

Thin pad material

On some wheels you can see the pad through the caliper. If the friction material looks thin compared to the metal backing plate, it's due for replacement. We check this properly during inspection rather than relying on a guess through the wheel spokes.

Signs Your Brake Discs Need Attention

Discs wear and fail differently to pads, and the signs are usually felt rather than heard.

Scoring or grooving on the surface

Often caused by worn pads that have gone metal on metal, or by grit and debris. Light scoring may be acceptable, deeper grooves usually mean the disc needs replacing.

Warping, felt as vibration or juddering

Most commonly noticeable as a pulsing sensation through the brake pedal or steering wheel under braking, caused by uneven disc thickness or heat distortion.

Discolouration from heat

Discs that have run very hot, from heavy use or a dragging caliper, can show blue or purple discolouration. This can affect how well they perform and is worth having checked.

Feeling a vibration when you brake? It could be your discs.

A straight answer, not a blanket rule

Do You Need New Pads, or New Pads and Discs?

Whether discs need replacing alongside pads depends on their condition, not simply on how many times the pads have been changed. Pads are checked at every service, so wear is usually caught early.

We inspect both and give you a straight answer on which applies to your car, not a blanket "always replace both."

New pads only

OFTEN PERFECTLY REASONABLE

If the discs are still within a safe thickness and free of significant scoring or warping, fitting new pads to the existing discs does the job.

  • Discs within a safe minimum thickness
  • No significant scoring or warping

New pads and discs

NEEDED WHEN THE DISCS ARE WORN

Scored, warped, or below a safe minimum thickness, discs need replacing alongside the pads, since new pads bedding in against a damaged surface won't perform properly.

  • Scoring, warping, or heat discolouration present
  • Disc thickness below a safe minimum

Fitted correctly

The Parts We Fit

We fit quality parts, fitted correctly, matched to your vehicle rather than whatever's cheapest or first to hand.

Pad and disc quality varies, and getting it right matters for how your car stops, how long the parts last, and how they perform under load. We source parts suited to the vehicle and the way it's used.

  • Matched to your vehicle and the way it's used, not a one size fits all part
  • Fitted correctly by the same technicians every time
  • A proper bed in check before the car goes back to you

How We Quote Pad and Disc Replacement

Pad and disc replacement costs depend on the vehicle, the parts needed and whether both need doing, so GForce Tyres inspects first and quotes individually rather than publishing a fixed price list.

A pad only job on a small car is a different cost to pads and discs together on a larger or heavier vehicle. That's why we check the actual condition of your pads and discs before quoting, and give you a clear, written price before any work starts.

  • Inspection first, always, before anything is quoted
  • Clear breakdown of what's needed and why
  • No work carried out without your agreement
  • Second opinions welcome on another garage's quote

Brake Pads and Discs FAQs

Anything else, just call the workshop, we're happy to talk it through.

Not always. If your discs are in good condition, new pads on the existing discs is often fine. If the discs are scored, warped or thin, they'll need replacing alongside the pads.
A squealing noise is usually a built in wear indicator. Thin pad material visible through the wheel is another sign. We check both properly during inspection.
Usually worn pads that have gone metal on metal, or grit and debris trapped between the pad and disc surface.
This is commonly a sign of a warped or unevenly worn disc, felt as a pulsing sensation through the pedal or steering wheel.
We fit quality parts matched to your vehicle, sourced to suit how the car is used, with a proper bed in check before the car is handed back.
No. We inspect the actual wear on your pads and discs first, then give a clear written quote, since the cost depends on the vehicle and what's actually needed.
